Once your car completes 3 years from the registration date, it has to pass an MOT (Ministry of Transport) test by law every year to be permissible to be driven around on the UK roads as per Road Traffic Act 1988. The testable age for an ambulance, taxi, and eight-plus seater (except the driver seat) is one year. MOT test inspects the vehicle on 3 major aspects- safety, roadworthiness, and exhaust emissions. Before going for an MOT test, it is essential to know in which class your vehicle sits. One of the most common MOT test types is Class 4 MOT and here is a rundown on the kind of vehicles falling under this test type:

  • Cars which are meant to carry eight or fewer passengers
  • Motorhomes or caravans
  • Three-wheeled vehicles with ULW >450 kg (new category-L5e)
  • A motorised vehicle with four wheels AKA quad, with an unladen weight of 400 kg at the max
  • Quads made for carrying goods (500 kg weight limit and 15 kW net power at max)
  • Car-derived van (CDV) or a dual purpose vehicle
  • Public Service Vehicle (PSV) and private hire vehicles (with up to eight seats)
  • Taxis, minibuses or mini coach or microbus, ambulances (up to 12 passenger seats), and private passenger vehicles (category M1 or M2)
  • American pickups (up to 6500kg DGW)
  • Goods vehicles not exceeding 3,000kg DGW (category N1)
  • Quadricycles (new category-L6e or L7e)

Besides these, MOT types have further categorisation. Let’s have a look at a few that are related to class 4 vehicles:

  • M1: A vehicle which has 4 or more than 4 wheels with no more than 8 seats apart from the driver’s seat such as dual-purpose vehicles, motorhomes, and ambulances. However, quadricycles are not counted in.
  • M2: A passenger carrying vehicle which has 4 or more than 4 wheels with over 8 passenger seats except for the driver’s seat. DGW should not exceed 5,000kg for M2 category vehicles. Dual-purpose vehicles, motor caravans, and ambulances fall under this category.
  • N1: A goods carrying vehicle which has 4 or more wheels. A DGW for N1 vehicles must not go beyond 3,500kg.

From the date when they were first used, there is a particular term associated with each type of vehicle to be eligible for the MOT test:

  • Cars and motorcycles: four years old and over
  • Buses and taxis, trailers, large passenger carrying vehicles and heavy goods vehicles (over 3,500kgs gross weight): one-year-old
  • Light goods vehicles: 3 years old

Refer the papers of your vehicle and confirm if it has completed its 3 years by checking the registration date. If the 3 years have lapsed, you have to take your vehicle for an MOT test. In case your vehicle is old, check your previous MOT pass certificate and get to know about the exact date when the car was tested earlier. The Mot pass certificate is valid for 12 months.

So if it has completed one year, it’s up for another yearly MOT. Auto Surefit suggests you do not wait until the expiry date of the MOT certification and book your vehicle for the test 30 days before its due date.
